My New Zealand Summer

Quiet Saturday morning stroll with Dog

The forest walk like the back of my hand –known and loved and part of me

This time of year – the best of summer – expectation of sunshine and heat

As we walk I breathe in the sights and sounds, the smells, the feel of Summer

The feel: overwhelming at times, an almost impenetrable fortress of heat

Hits me in the face, until trees create a welcome tepid shadow

Interspersed on occasion with only the gentlest zephyr to cool my sweat

The smells: Pleasant smells of native forest and introduced pine sometimes mixed

with the aroma of gums – a fragrance, a spice, delightful scent not taken for granted

Too soon replaced when summer gives way to autumn

The sights: Ten thousand shades of green and brown, bright light and shadow

Trees, and sky of boldest blue, streams and rocks; leaves and grasses and gentle fronds

Flitting fantails delight in the dance; heavy kereru startle the unsuspecting;

Tuis sing from treetops then swoop on by in search of another, a better perch

The sounds: Ubiquitous music of summer tinnitus – the constant din

Deafening intensity of happy cicadas doing what happy cicadas do

One man’s tinnitus is another man’s chorus

  1. Love these photos, I can almost smell the NZ bush and the fresh air! I have had a shuffle around of my scheduled posts for “You inspire me” and the 2nd post you inspired with your kind suggestions is post #114 . Hope you enjoy it!

  2. I am sitting here in New Jersey and it is 15 degrees and the wind is howling and blowing snow around. Your post took me from this cold place to a a space of warmth and beauty. What a gifted descriptive writer you are and the photos are a wonderful bonus to accompany your words.

  3. Summer seems so far away for us in the Northern hemisphere! I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful posting as it reminded me that it is green somewhere. With the temp at 8F and ground frozen/snow-covered. I think I need to find some green. Thank you so much for posting.

  4. Lovely. I am on a lonely beach in Mexico trying to stave off the winter blues for a few days. It never ceases to amaze me that it’s winter here and summer where you are. I’ll get there some spring, I think.

  5. Ah, missing the summer now that winter has decided to show up where I am. Everything is so much more alive in the summer, I love the winter silence but sometimes I long for the buzz of life.

    1. I hear you! I love the silence and solitude of winter (because it’s a choice) but have so enjoyed this summer and being amongst it and enjoying the forests, the buzz and the insect & bird life doing their stuff and just that sense of life. I can so relate. Thanks for your comment 🙂
